Naughty Orange Jello Dessert

Ever wanted to have a dessert that took you back to the days when you were catching fireflies in the early evening hours as your grand pappy looked on in his favorite rocking chair?  How about a dessert that could transport you back to your college days when three of your buddies decided to throw laundry soup in the campus fountain and celebrated with a swig of your latest trash can concoction.  Ahh…those were the good days.  Well, I’m thrilled to create a dessert that provides the best of the innocence of Jello and the dirty adult pleasure of my favorite alcoholic beverage.

The robust orange flavor of the Jello is further intensified by the mellow hint of citrus that is found in Bacardi O Rum.  I love to serve these delightful adult treats in a martini glass and top with orange infused whipped cream to create a unique presentation for my guests.

Naughty Orange Jello Dessert
2 cups boiling water
2 pkg. (3 oz. each) of orange Jello
½ cup cold water
½ cup Bacardi O Rum, cold

Topping:
1 cup Cool Whip topping
1 tablespoon orange zest
1 orange slice per glass

Serves 4 – 8 depending on the size of your glasses.

Pour one packet of the dry Jello into a shallow plate that is slightly larger than the martini glass.  Rup the rim of each glass with an orange slice and dip them into the dry Jello powder.  Set glasses aside.

Combine the excess rimming Jello with the additional dry packet in a large bowl and dissolve in the boiling water.  Cool the dissolved liquid mixture with the cold water and rum.  Make sure the rum and water are very cold.

Fill each martini glass 2/3 full with the Jello mixture and chill for about 3 hours or until firm.  To make things easier, I typically use a bowl with a pour spout to reduce the mess when I’m filling the glasses.

Once the Jello is firm, fold the orange zest into the Cool Whip topping until well incorporated.  Be careful not to overmix.  Top each glass with the whipped topping and garnish with an orange.

Authors Note:  I really like using Bacardi O Rum with the dessert.  However, the same process would work perfect with any flavor of Jello.  Just make sure you select complementary flavored liquor for added flavor.  Also, since this dessert contains alcohol, I do not recommend serving this to anyone under 21.

    Hi Culinary Cory,
Just wanted to let you know I “borrowed” this link for the Jell-O Rules Give-Away I’m kicking off for Jell-O Week, 2009.

    Thanks so much for posting…

This looks like a very pretty & grownup version of the jello shooters of my past! I’m ashamed to say that I plan to make these for my Grandmother (who could drink me under the table any day!) just for fun.

The liquor-infused Jello may be naughty, but the presentation is nice. Actually, it’s way better than nice – it’s spectacular.
