8 Football Game Day Recipe Ideas

The trees bordering my backyard have turned from deep greens to rich shades of fiery red, yellow, and gold. Clearly fall is upon us in Pittsburgh and I’m trying to take advantage of the last droplets of sunshine by writing on my back patio. Sophie is following my lead by doing laps and getting dirty in the yard like a little girl outfitted in her best party dress. Neither of us have a care in the world that her coat is now full of sticks and leaf fragments.
Fall in this city means football season. Pittsburgh is Steeler country after all and truly shows its colors on game days. As someone who does not watch football, I am amazed at how this city shuts down from the time of kickoff to the post game wrap-up. When is the best time to go grocery shopping? During the game.
This is the only city I have ever lived where strangers will stop me at Home Depot and say, “How about them Steelers?” (It’s happened to me twice.) Not wanting to offend anyone with my terrible knowledge of football lingo, I quickly respond with a tip of my hat and shuffle off to the seasonal displays. Steeler pride runs as high, wide and deep to native Pittsburghers. So in honor, here are a few of my favorite game day recipes.
- Buffalo Chicken Pizza
- Polynesian Glazed Wings
- Slow Cooker Mac and Cheese
- Artichoke and Spinach Dip
- Nachos with Baked Corn Tortilla Chips
- Sun-Dried Tomato Dip
- Sweet BBQ Meatballs
- Baby Bloody Mary Burgers

CC,
You just reminded me to make my spinach artichoke dip again!
I find you can always deflect a sports conversation you know nothing about by either answering “Right?” at which point they’ll elaborate on whatever they were originally thinking about, or “They got some bad calls!” which is nearly always true.
Bloody Mary? In a burger? I’m SO there!
I’m originally from Browns territory, so I was going to have to make fun of you … until you said you’re not a native. So I guess you’re still all right.
Great idea for a post!
