My First Tomato of the Summer
I had grand visions of planting a lush garden in my backyard this past spring. It would have been bountiful and ripe with gleaming red tomatoes, crisp cucumbers, string beans and even a few of zucchini plants. Sadly, life got in the way and the activities of summer began to take priority. Those daydreams were quickly scaled down to 1 large basil, 2 tomato and 2 tomatillo plants that I impulsively purchased at a big box home improvement store. Planted in large pots with bamboo rods plunged deep into the rich soil, my plants have grown into a lush jungle bursting ...
Balsamic Strawberry Shortcake
March 2nd for most people is like any other day of the year. But for me, it is the day I celebrate my birth. My own personal holiday if you will. You guessed it; today I turn the ripe old age of…. Ha! You thought I was going to bake and tell. Well, there is no way I’m going to share my age on a website that is read by millions…well maybe thousands…ok actually..hundreds of people. I have to leave some level of mystery. Right? Since I wasn’t really in the mood to bake a cake this year, I opted for one ...
Culinary Cory Gets Shout Out on SaraMoulton.com
It’s amazing when interesting things happen in the most unexpected places. A few months ago, Sara Moulton made a stop at a local kitchen store in Pittsburgh to conduct a cooking demo and promote her new book. The weather wasn’t the most cooperative as rain poured intensely for much of the morning. I nearly decided to stay home until I told myself to suck it up and make the most of my day off. Looking back, I’m definitely glad I went. Sara’s demo was amazing as she effortlessly engaged with the audience that surrounded the U-shape cooking space. Her new book ...
Baby Burgers on Foodo
I love a really good burger regardless of its size, choice of toppings or seasonings. When I lived in Chicago my go-to burger joint was T’s in Andersonville. I would occasionally pony up to the bar on Monday’s for a double pint of Blue Moon and a ridiculously delicious burger with a side of garlic mayo for my fries. Here in Pittsburgh, Tessaro’s makes its way to the top of my list for juicy wood-fired beefy goodness. My longtime friend Mary writes her own food blog called Food o’ del Mundo. So when she asked if I was interested in ...

I currently work for a marketing company that focuses on helping independent retailers use email and social media marketing to drive more traffic to their stores. (Wow…I think that was the most corporate sounding sentence I have written on CulinaryCory.com in a long time.) This week I traveled Atlanta to promote the company and its products at a... [Read more]

My friend Jimmy is mildly allergic to the magical world of peanuts. One day he was pining for the rich taste of no bake cookies even though one bite would cause quite a bit of discomfort. Through a little trial and error, I discovered soy butter is a great alternative to peanut butter. The flavor is rich and still works well with the chocolate. I like... [Read more]
Creative juices flowed freely while preparing dinner for a few friends. I knew a simple salad would be the perfect opportunity to use a lone can of mandarin oranges that has been setting on my pantry shelf. I honestly can’t remember when I bought the can and I needed to silence it’s desperate cries to be opened. No worries. I checked the... [Read more]
There are days when I feel like I don’t partake in the world of kabob cooking enough. Everything tastes better when cooked on a stick, right? Plus, slathering the pierced items with a sticky sauce makes it even better. For this recipe, I decided to use metal skewer rods because they would hold up better under the intense heat. If you decide to use... [Read more]
